The Regeneration of Cumbria’s
Military Museum in Carlisle Castle

Cumbria’s Military Museum has outgrown its present location in Queen Mary’s Tower (pictured below), a 16th century building in the inner ward of Carlisle Castle.

This prevents any further development of the Museum and its services. We must move!
The project will create a wonderful new military museum in the Alma building to open in 2012-13. Built in 1932 in the Regency style, and one of the former Regimental Depot buildings, Alma is over twice the size of Queen Mary’s Tower. The project will cost up to £1 million. An Appeal Fund has been established to raise funds for the capital costs of the project and to sustain the Museum into the future. It will turn an impressive set of plans into a living reality!

The new Museum will have:
• Increased access to the Museum collections through new and exciting interactive displays and exhibitions
• An exhibitions area for a temporary & touring exhibitions programme
• Dedicated areas for research and study and information services for visitors
• Dedicated area for educational, family and group learning activities
• Improved storage space and facilities for the object collections, library, photographic and documentary archive
• Suitable accommodation and work areas for the staff
• Suitable facilities for the public including disabled access, lift, toilets, a visitor reception area and Museum shop
The new Museum is designed to attract a larger audience from and provide resources for:
• All areas of the local community
• Community groups
• Tourists and holiday-makers
• The Regimental family, past, present and future
• School and educational groups
• Local businesses and organisations
• Adult/life-long learning and higher education groups and researchers
It will enable the Museum to:
• Tell the fascinating story of Cumbria’s County Infantry Regiment and the lives of its soldiers and their families from 1702 to the present day, as well as the history of other military units in the county and the home front in the two World Wars.
• Relate both the military and social history of Carlisle Castle as a military barracks, the home of the Regiment since 1873.
• Ensure the preservation of the important collections and allow development in both the short and longer term
• Ensure the preservation of an important listed building with strong historical connections to the Regiment
• Contribute to Carlisle’s wider heritage development strategy as part of the historic core of the City
• Continue to benefit directly from Carlisle Castle as a major visitor destination.
• Provide displays and exhibitions that will be attractive to all users, family friendly and supportive of life-long learning
• Provide a Resource & Information Centre for use by individuals and groups from schools, further education colleges, universities and the wider community
